It All Began with Salt.
Before ILMARI KUURA™, before Finnish soapstone and before the KIUASSUOLA™ collection we know today, there was one simple question:
Could natural mineral salt become part of the Finnish sauna in a way that truly belonged there?
That question became the beginning of KIUASSUOLA™.
Our Sauna Ritual Salt is not a fragrance added to the sauna or a separate wellness treatment. It is a natural material designed to become part of the familiar relationship between heat, moisture, steam and stone.
We did not bring salt into the sauna to disguise what was already there.
We brought it in to become part of it.
From Salt Rooms to the Finnish Sauna
The original inspiration for KIUASSUOLA™ came from the world of salt rooms.
We were interested in the relationship between natural salt, warmth and moisture, and how these elements could inspire a new kind of Finnish sauna ritual.
Our earliest product development was especially influenced by the needs of people with sensitive skin, asthma, allergies and fragrance sensitivities.
We wanted to explore a natural, fragrance-free alternative that would feel familiar in an ordinary home sauna.
No additional treatment room. No complicated equipment. No need to change the way we enjoy sauna.
From that idea, the original KIUASSUOLA™ innovation was born.
KIUASSUOLA™ is not halotherapy or a medical treatment. It is our own Finnish sauna innovation, inspired by the world of salt rooms and developed around the traditions of Finnish sauna bathing.

When Natural Salt Meets the Sauna
KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt is designed to be used with a dedicated KIUASSUOLA™ soapstone base, such as ILMARI KUURA™.
As the sauna heats up, the Finnish soapstone gradually absorbs and retains warmth. The surrounding humidity and occasional splashes of löyly water allow the natural salt to be used gradually during regular sauna bathing.
There is no need to introduce a new ceremony.
Water is poured onto the sauna stones as usual, and the ritual becomes part of the sauna's natural rhythm.

Why These Particular Salts?
At KIUASSUOLA™, we do not choose our raw materials simply because they are natural.
We want to know where they come from, how they are produced and what their documented quality tells us.
Our Sauna Ritual Salts are made from carefully selected, unrefined natural salts.
We add no fragrances or artificial colouring, and we do not attempt to make every production batch look identical.
Natural salt is not always perfectly white. Its colours, crystal structure, texture and moisture can vary.
We believe that genuine natural materials should be allowed to show their character.
Nature is allowed to remain visible in the finished product.
Atlantic Sea Salt – Portugal
Our Atlantic Sea Salt is a traditional, unrefined grey sea salt from Portugal.
It is harvested by hand from traditional salt beds with a natural clay base.
The salt is unwashed, untreated and free from added ingredients.
Its natural appearance can range from almost white to grey, warm beige and yellow-toned shades. Differences in moisture and crystal structure may also occur between production batches.
These variations are part of the nature of traditional sea salt.
Himalayan Rock Salt – Pakistan
Our Himalayan Rock Salt comes from underground salt deposits in Pakistan.
It is an unrefined natural crystal salt whose colours reflect its geological origin and natural mineral composition.
Laboratory analysis of the salt used in KIUASSUOLA™ products has identified naturally occurring minerals, including calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese.
Individual salt crystals can range from almost white and delicate pale pink to deeper reddish and brown shades.
These natural variations are part of what makes every raw material batch unique.
Quality Is in the Details
We believe the quality of a natural material deserves closer attention than its appearance alone.
For us, origin, production methods, laboratory documentation and quality control are all important parts of selecting our salts.
Natural variation does not mean that quality is unimportant. Quite the opposite.
We accept the natural character of the material while paying careful attention to its origin and documented quality.

Finished and Packed by Hand in Finland
Every KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt is finished and packed by hand in Finland.
During production, the appearance and structure of the salt are inspected before packaging.
Our Sauna Ritual Salts carry the Finnish Key Flag (Avainlippu) – a certification of Finnish work and origin.
For us, Finnish craftsmanship is also about knowing our materials, understanding their natural qualities and paying attention to the details.

KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt is designed for continued use with a reusable KIUASSUOLA™ soapstone base.
The natural salt is gradually used during sauna bathing.
When one salt is nearly finished, another takes its place.
The soapstone base remains part of the sauna, while each new KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt continues the experience.
With sauna bathing approximately twice per week, one salt typically lasts around two months.
Actual usage varies depending on sauna temperature, humidity, water use and the frequency of sauna bathing.

How to Use KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt
1. Use the correct soapstone base
KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt must always be used with a dedicated KIUASSUOLA™ ritual base, such as ILMARI KUURA™ or ILMARI™.
For international customers, ILMARI KUURA™ is our original Finnish soapstone ritual product available through selected international retailers.
2. Place the salt into the base
Place one KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt securely inside the soapstone base.
Follow the placement and heating instructions supplied with your KIUASSUOLA™ base.
3. Enjoy your sauna as usual
Pour löyly water onto the surrounding sauna stones.
Normal water splashes onto the soapstone base are allowed. Its raised rim is designed to help protect the salt during regular sauna bathing.
Avoid intentionally pouring large amounts of water directly onto the salt or base.
Use sauna water that is at least lukewarm or warmer, as sudden temperature changes can place unnecessary stress on heated natural stone.
4. Replace the salt when needed
When the previous salt has been almost completely used, allow the soapstone base to cool before cleaning or replacing the salt.
Any remaining salt residue can be removed with clean water if necessary.
Add a new KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt and continue the ritual.
Use only with a KIUASSUOLA™ ritual base. Do not place the salt directly onto sauna stones or heating elements.
