Heat. Steam. Stone. Salt.

What if we added nothing unnecessary to a sauna moment – and instead paid more attention to what was already there?

Heat. Steam. Stone. Silence.

This is the thought behind ILMARI KUURA™.

In the Finnish sauna, simplicity does not mean that something is missing. Quite the opposite. When unnecessary distractions are removed, natural materials, warmth and löyly have more room to speak for themselves.

ILMARI KUURA™ brings together Finnish soapstone and natural KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt. No added fragrances, no complicated ceremony. Just a quiet ritual that becomes part of the sauna itself.

We did not create it to turn the Finnish sauna into something else.

We created it to belong there.

Where It All Began

KIUASSUOLA™ was not born from the desire to create just another sauna accessory.

It began with people.

Our original innovation was developed with sensitive sauna users in mind, including people living with atopic skin, asthma, allergies and fragrance sensitivities.

We wanted to explore a natural, fragrance-free way of bringing mineral salt into the everyday Finnish sauna.

The inspiration came from salt rooms. We were fascinated by the relationship between natural salt, warmth and moisture – and wondered whether this idea could become part of an ordinary home sauna without separate equipment or a complicated new routine.

That question led to the original KIUASSUOLA™ sauna salt ritual.

ILMARI KUURA™ is the next chapter of that development.

It is not a medical treatment or a substitute for salt-room therapy. It is our own Finnish sauna innovation, created to bring natural materials and a different dimension to the familiar sauna experience.

Natural salt. Heat. Moisture. Löyly. And the Finnish sauna.

A Stone That Belongs in the Finnish Sauna

When we began developing the next generation of KIUASSUOLA™, we knew the material had to feel as natural in the sauna as the sauna stones themselves.

We found the answer in Finnish soapstone.

Soapstone has a remarkable ability to absorb heat and release it slowly and evenly. It warms together with the sauna heater and retains warmth between löyly cycles, making it a natural companion for KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt.

ILMARI KUURA™ is crafted from a rare blue-toned variety of Finnish soapstone.

Each piece carries its own patterns, layers and shades, formed by nature over millions of years. Some stones reveal soft grey-blue surfaces, others darker veins and delicate contrasts.

No two are exactly alike.

The name KUURA – meaning frost in Finnish – was inspired by this stone. Its cool, layered colours reminded us of a quiet Nordic winter morning.

The soapstone bases are manufactured in Finland in collaboration with Tulikivi®, bringing together Finnish stone craftsmanship and our original sauna innovation.

Heat. Steam. Stone. Salt.

The ritual itself is deliberately simple.

ILMARI KUURA™ rests among the sauna stones and warms as the sauna heater heats up.

A piece of natural KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt is placed on the soapstone base.

Water is poured onto the sauna stones as usual, allowing the surrounding warmth and moisture to interact gradually with the salt.

The soapstone base is designed with a protective rim extending above the salt, allowing for normal splashes of löyly water during sauna bathing.

There is no need to learn an entirely new way of taking a sauna.

The sauna is still a sauna.

ILMARI KUURA™ simply becomes part of its rhythm.

Many of our customers describe their sauna moments with KIUASSUOLA™ as softer, calmer and more comfortable. These are personal experiences, and they have been an important part of our journey as we have continued developing the original idea.

Nothing Artificial to Fill the Air

From the beginning, one of our guiding principles has been to avoid unnecessary fragrances and additives.

Our natural sauna ritual salts contain no added fragrances or artificial colouring.

We do not try to standardise their natural appearance. Their colour, moisture and crystal structure are allowed to vary because they are genuine natural materials.

The idea is not to introduce a new perfume into the sauna.

The idea is to let the sauna remain recognisably itself.

Natural Salt – Quality Is in the Details

Not all natural salt looks the same. And we believe it shouldn't have to.

At KIUASSUOLA™, we use carefully selected, unrefined natural salts whose origin, production methods and documented quality matter to us.

Our salt is not artificially coloured or fragranced. Its natural shades, crystal structure and moisture are allowed to vary.

We believe genuine materials should be allowed to show their natural character.

Atlantic Sea Salt – Portugal

Our Atlantic sea salt is a traditional, unrefined sea salt harvested by hand from salt beds with a natural clay base.

Its appearance may vary from almost white to grey, yellow-toned and warm beige. Natural differences in moisture and crystal structure are also part of the material.

Himalayan Rock Salt – Pakistan

Our Himalayan rock salt comes from ancient underground salt deposits in Pakistan.

Its crystals may range from almost white and pale pink to deeper reddish and brown shades.

Laboratory analysis has identified naturally occurring minerals, including calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese.

Knowing where our materials come from is important to us.

We pay attention not only to their origin, but also to production methods, documented quality and natural variations.

Every KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt is finished and packed by hand in Finland.

We do not believe that natural materials need to look identical to be beautiful or carefully made.

Natural salt is allowed to look natural.

Made to Stay – Designed for Real Sauna Use

ILMARI KUURA™ is not a disposable sauna accessory.

The salt is gradually used during sauna bathing, but the Finnish soapstone base remains and can be refilled with a new KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt.

Like all natural sauna stones, soapstone is exposed to repeated changes in temperature, heat and moisture.

Over time, these conditions gradually affect the stone. Its surface may change, and the material will slowly wear with regular sauna use.

This is a natural characteristic of stone used in sauna conditions.

We do not expect a natural material to remain visually unchanged forever.

Each ILMARI KUURA™ has its own patterns and appearance from the beginning, and its character continues to develop through use.

Your KUURA gradually becomes part of the history of your own sauna.

A natural material, made for continued use.

The Story Behind the Name

The name ILMARI KUURA™ brings together Finnish mythology, northern nature and a personal family story.

ILMARI echoes Ilmarinen, the legendary smith of the Finnish national epic Kalevala, who forged the mysterious Sampo – a mythical source of abundance, associated in Finnish folklore with salt and prosperity.

KUURA comes from the frosty blue-grey appearance of the Finnish soapstone.

But ILMARI has another meaning for us.

It was also my grandfather's name.

For that reason, ILMARI KUURA™ is more than a product name.

It connects the Finnish roots of our innovation with our own family history.

Genuine Finnish Origin

ILMARI KUURA™ is developed and manufactured in Finland. The soapstone bases are produced in collaboration with Tulikivi®, and our sauna ritual salts are finished and packed by hand in Finland.

The product carries the Finnish Key Flag (Avainlippu) – a certification of Finnish work and origin.

How to Use ILMARI KUURA™

1. Before heating the sauna

Place the soapstone base securely among the upper sauna stones before heating the sauna.

Position it slightly away from the main area where water is poured.

With electric sauna heaters, ensure that the product does not touch the heating elements. With wood-fired heaters, do not place it directly against the chimney or flue.

Place one KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt inside the soapstone base.

2. During sauna bathing

Pour löyly water normally onto the surrounding sauna stones.

Normal splashes of water onto ILMARI KUURA™ are allowed.

The soapstone base has been designed with a protective rim above the salt specifically to accommodate splashing during regular sauna bathing.

However, avoid intentionally pouring large amounts of water directly onto the product.

Always use water that is at least hand-warm (lukewarm) or warmer. Cold water can cause unnecessary thermal stress to heated natural stone.

Allow the soapstone base to regain heat between löyly cycles.

The ritual works as a natural part of your usual sauna routine.

3. After sauna bathing

ILMARI KUURA™ may remain on a suitable sauna heater between sessions.

Allow the stone to cool naturally together with the sauna stones.

For always-ready heaters with a lid, do not leave the product beneath the closed lid. Follow the heater-specific instructions.

4. Cleaning and maintenance

Allow the product to cool completely before handling or cleaning.

If necessary, rinse the soapstone base with clean water and let it dry naturally.

Do not use detergents or chemical cleaners.

As with other natural sauna stones, changes in appearance and gradual wear are normal over time. Inspect the base periodically and discontinue use if cracking or damage makes it unsafe or unstable.

5. Replacing the salt

When the KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt has gradually dissolved, replace it with a new KIUASSUOLA™ refill.

Use only KIUASSUOLA™ Sauna Ritual Salt with the ILMARI KUURA™ soapstone base.

One Finnish Stone. A Ritual That Continues.

ILMARI KUURA™ brings together the materials we believe belong in a Finnish sauna: stone, salt, heat and steam.

It carries a story of Finnish craftsmanship, personal roots and the belief that meaningful experiences do not need to be complicated.

From the Finnish sauna to the world. Genuine in origin. Uncomplicated by nature.
