Natural salt is not always pure white. Nor does every batch look exactly the same in colour, texture or moisture.
In KIUASSUOLA™ products, we use two different unrefined natural salts: Atlantic sea salt and Himalayan rock salt from Pakistan. Each has its own origin, formation process and natural mineral composition – which means that some natural variation in appearance is to be expected.
Atlantic sea salt can range from almost white to greyish, yellow-toned and warm beige. Different shades may appear within the same salt, sometimes giving the crystals a slightly speckled appearance.
Variation can be even more noticeable in Himalayan rock salt: its crystals can range from almost white and delicate pale pink to deeper reddish and brown tones.
This is not a sign of inconsistency in quality. It is a natural characteristic of the material.
What does unrefined salt mean?
Refining is a process used to purify and standardise a raw material. With unrefined natural salt, processing is kept to a minimum and the aim is not to make every batch as white, uniform and visually identical as possible.
As a result, natural variations in colour, mineral composition and crystal structure – and, depending on the type of salt, moisture – can remain visible in the raw material.
The international Codex Alimentarius food standards, developed by FAO and WHO, also recognise the natural variation found in salt. Salt consists primarily of sodium chloride, but naturally contains other compounds whose levels may vary depending on its origin and method of production.
Natural salt is not made according to a colour chart.
Atlantic sea salt – sea, clay and traditional harvesting
The coarse Atlantic sea salt used in KIUASSUOLA™ products is a traditional grey sea salt.
It is unrefined, unwashed, untreated and free from additives. The salt is traditionally harvested by hand from salt beds with a natural clay base.
This is also important when understanding its appearance.
Unrefined Atlantic sea salt does not have to be uniformly white. Grey, yellowish and beige crystals can naturally occur among the lighter ones. When crystals of different shades appear together, the salt may have a slightly speckled appearance.
According to information provided by our supplier, the layer from which the formed salt is harvested and dried can also influence its appearance. In a natural production process, different layers are not completely identical.
This means that salt from the same origin and produced using the same traditional methods may still look different from one batch to another.
Moisture is part of the natural character of sea salt
With Atlantic sea salt, natural variation is not limited to colour.
Moisture can vary too.
Salt reacts to humidity in its surroundings, and the natural composition of sea salt affects the way it behaves in contact with moisture. One batch may therefore be drier and more free-flowing, while another may feel slightly more moist or form crystals that cling together more easily.
Moisture can also affect appearance. A moist crystal reflects light differently from a dry one, which can make natural grey, yellow and beige tones more visible.
Small variations in the colour, structure and moisture of unrefined Atlantic sea salt are therefore a normal part of the raw material.
Himalayan rock salt – a different origin and a different character
Himalayan rock salt is formed in an entirely different way from sea salt.
The unrefined Himalayan crystal salt we use comes from underground salt deposits in Pakistan. It is an ancient geological natural material, and the different layers of the deposit are not identical in their mineral composition.
This is why the colour of the salt can vary.
In addition to sodium chloride, laboratory analysis of the Himalayan crystal salt we use has identified naturally occurring minerals including calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron and manganese.
These naturally occurring minerals contribute to the appearance of the salt. Individual crystals may range from almost white and delicate pale pink to deeper reddish and brown shades.
The location and geological layer from which the salt is mined also make a difference. This is why several different shades can occur side by side even within a single package.
It is a natural characteristic of Himalayan rock salt.
Documented raw material quality matters to us
When selecting salt for KIUASSUOLA™ products, knowing the country of origin alone is not enough for us.
We also want to understand how the raw material is produced, its composition and how its quality is controlled.
According to our supplier's documentation, the Himalayan crystal salt we use is mined with consideration for the environment and without the use of child labour. It meets Codex Alimentarius requirements and has undergone laboratory analysis in both Pakistan and Germany.
Production is supported by an ISO 9001 quality management system and HACCP food safety procedures. The purity of the raw material is also verified through laboratory testing.
Its composition has been analysed in detail. In addition to sodium chloride, testing covers naturally occurring minerals including calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese, as well as moisture and iodine levels.
For us, these are more than technical details. They are part of traceability and of knowing as precisely as possible what goes into KIUASSUOLA™ products.
No fragrances or additives used to standardise appearance
The idea behind KIUASSUOLA™ products is simple.
We want to use authentic natural materials in the sauna, with as little unnecessary processing as possible.
No fragrances are added to our salts. Their natural colour is not standardised with colouring agents, and the Atlantic sea salt we use contains no additives intended to make its appearance more uniform.
We do not want to process a natural material simply to make every production batch look exactly the same.
Nature is allowed to remain visible in the finished product.
Finished and packed by hand in Finland
A high-quality raw material is only the starting point.
Every KIUASSUOLA™ sauna salt product is finished and packed by hand in Finland.
KIUASSUOLA™ sauna salt products carry the Finnish Key Flag (Avainlippu), awarded to products representing Finnish work and production. It is also a clear mark of the Finnish origin of our finished sauna salt products.
During production, we inspect the appearance and structure of the salt before the finished product is packed for the customer.
We see each batch we use and its individual characteristics. Natural differences in colour, texture and moisture are accepted as part of the material, while we ensure that every raw material used meets the quality standards we expect from KIUASSUOLA™.
Hand-finishing and packing also mean that the raw material does not simply move automatically from a bulk container into a finished package. It passes through our hands and our quality checks as part of the production process.
Why can natural salt vary from batch to batch?
If you have been using our products for some time, you may occasionally notice a difference between one package and the next.
One batch of Atlantic sea salt may contain more beige or greyish crystals, while another may appear very pale. Small differences in moisture and crystal structure can also occur.
One batch of Himalayan rock salt may be delicately pale pink, while another may contain stronger reddish or brown tones.
Different shades can also appear within the same package.
Variations in colour, moisture and texture do not change the way KIUASSUOLA™ products are used.
They simply reflect the fact that these are natural raw materials whose characteristics have not been processed into complete visual uniformity.
Natural variation is part of genuine materials
For us, quality does not mean making a natural material look industrially manufactured.
It means knowing where our raw materials come from, understanding their characteristics, paying attention to how they are produced and how their quality is documented, and inspecting the materials as part of our own production process in Finland.
The pattern and colour of natural soapstone vary from one piece to another.
The shades of Himalayan rock salt vary according to its natural composition and geological layer.
The colour, structure and moisture of Atlantic sea salt can vary depending on harvesting conditions and production batch.
Natural variation is part of working with genuine materials – and for us, understanding those materials is part of quality.
